Sarees

What is the difference between a Banarasi and a Kanjivaram saree?

Banarasi sarees are woven in Varanasi, UP. They feature intricate zari brocade, Meenakari work, and Mughal-inspired floral motifs. Available in Katan silk, semi-silk, tissue, and georgette. Lighter and more draped-friendly than Kanjivaram.

Kanjivaram sarees are woven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. Made from heavier pure mulberry silk with bold contrasting pallus and temple borders. A South Indian wedding staple now beloved across India and the diaspora.

What saree fabric is best for a summer wedding in California?

For warm California weather, choose lightweight fabrics: chiffon and georgette drape beautifully without adding heat. Organza with zari borders works well for festive evening events. Linen and cotton sarees are ideal for daytime outdoor weddings. Reserve heavy Banarasi silk or Kanjivaram for indoor events and evening receptions. Browse our Chiffon & Georgette Sarees.

What is a pre-draped saree?

A pre-draped saree is a ready-to-wear saree that comes already pleated and pinned — you simply step in and fasten it, no draping skills required. It's the fastest-growing saree style for the Indian-American diaspora, perfect for women who love the saree look but find traditional draping difficult. Browse our Sarees collection for pre-draped styles.

What is a dupatta and how do you wear it?

A dupatta is a long rectangular scarf (2.5–3 meters) worn with salwar kameez, Anarkali suits, lehengas, and over saree blouses. Common styling methods:

  • Draped over one shoulder — classic everyday style
  • Pleated and pinned at the shoulder — structured, formal
  • Wrapped around the neck — casual Indo-western look
  • Spread across both arms — traditional bridal or festive style

Men's Ethnic Wear

What is a kurta pajama?

A kurta pajama is the most popular Indian ethnic wear outfit for men — a long tunic (kurta) over matching straight-cut trousers (pajama). It comes in fabrics from silk and raw silk for weddings to cotton and linen for daily wear. It's the go-to outfit for weddings, Eid, Diwali, Navratri, sangeet, and casual occasions. Browse our Kurta Pajama collection.

What is the best kurta pajama for an Indian wedding?

For wedding guests, a silk or raw silk kurta pajama in a jewel tone (navy, maroon, emerald, royal blue) with subtle embroidery is ideal. Add a Nehru jacket for extra formality. The groom traditionally wears an embroidered sherwani. Browse our Wedding Kurta Pajama collection.

What is the difference between a kurta pajama and a sherwani?

A kurta pajama is a relaxed two-piece (long tunic + trousers) appropriate for all occasions from casual to formal. A sherwani is a structured formal long coat traditionally worn by the groom. For male wedding guests, a silk kurta pajama with a Nehru jacket is the correct choice — not a sherwani.

What is a Nehru jacket and how is it worn?

A Nehru jacket is a structured collarless or mandarin-collar jacket worn over a kurta. It instantly elevates a simple kurta to formal-appropriate and is far more comfortable than a sherwani for long events. It can be worn over both kurta pajama and kurta with trousers for a contemporary Indo-western look. Browse our Nehru & Modi Jackets.

What to Wear: Occasion Guide

What should I wear to an Indian wedding as a guest?

Women: A saree (silk or georgette for ceremony, chiffon for daytime), salwar kameez, Anarkali suit, or lehenga choli. Avoid white and all-black at traditional ceremonies.

Men: A silk kurta pajama in a jewel tone, optionally with a Nehru jacket. See our complete guide: What to Wear to an Indian Wedding as a Man →

What colors should I wear to an Indian wedding?

Great choices: navy blue, emerald green, deep maroon, royal blue, purple, champagne, teal. Avoid: white (sometimes reserved for the bride), all-black (associated with mourning in some communities), bright red or cream (often worn by the bride or groom).

What Indian ethnic wear is trending in 2026?

Top 2026 trends include: tone-on-tone embroidery (ivory on ivory, gold on gold); pre-draped sarees for easy wear; jewel tones — emerald, sapphire, ruby; lightweight breathable fabrics — chanderi, linen, georgette; and for men: minimalist linen kurta pajamas and structured bandhgala jackets.
