The Story Behind Kalamkari, Bandhani & Block Print Fabrics

In an age of fast fashion and mass production, Indian artisanal fabrics tell a different story — one of centuries-old craft traditions, regional identity, and extraordinary human skill. At Kaash Collection, we carry fabrics that honor this legacy. Here are the stories behind three of our most beloved printed and dyed fabric traditions.

Kalamkari: Painting in Thread

Kalamkari — literally "kalam" (pen) and "kari" (work) — is a centuries-old art form from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in South India. It refers to the hand-drawing or block-printing of intricate designs onto fabric using natural dyes.

Two Traditions of Kalamkari

  • Srikalahasti style: Entirely hand-drawn using a bamboo or tamarind pen (the kalam). Artists use natural dyes — made from plants, minerals, and plant-derived mordants — to draw detailed narrative scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, or geometric and floral patterns.
  • Machilipatnam style: Block-printed using carved wooden blocks, with some hand-finishing. The designs are equally intricate, featuring floral and temple-art motifs.

How to identify Kalamkari: Look for fine, hand-drawn lines (in Srikalahasti) or precisely repeated block-printed designs (in Machilipatnam). Natural dyes produce soft, slightly uneven color tones — no two pieces are identical.

Where you'll see it: Kalamkari sarees, Kurta fabrics, dupatta panels, and blouse pieces. The narrative artistry makes each piece a wearable painting.

Bandhani: The Art of Tie-Dye

Bandhani — from the Sanskrit word "bandh," meaning "to tie" — is a resist-dyeing technique in which tiny portions of fabric are tied with thread before dyeing, creating intricate patterns of dots, waves, and geometric forms when the ties are removed.

Origins & Regional Traditions

Bandhani has been practiced in Gujarat and Rajasthan for over 5,000 years — making it one of the oldest textile arts in the world. Historically, it was created by artisan communities called Khatris, who are still its primary practitioners today.

Famous Bandhani varieties:

  • Gujarati Bandhani: Fine, densely patterned dots in vibrant colors — often worn at Navratri and wedding celebrations
  • Rajasthani Bandhani (Laheria and Mothda): Diagonal or wave-patterned tie-dye in vivid Rajasthani colors — reds, yellows, and oranges

How to identify authentic Bandhani: Authentic Bandhani has slightly uneven, organic patterns — no two dots are perfectly identical. Machine imitations have perfectly uniform patterns. The reverse of authentic Bandhani shows the tied knot patterns clearly.

Best occasions to wear Bandhani: Navratri, Teej, Mehndi ceremonies, and any festive occasion where vibrant color is celebrated.

Block Printing: The Language of Wood and Color

Block printing is one of India's oldest fabric arts — carved wooden blocks dipped in natural dye and pressed onto fabric, repeat by repeat, creating intricate, layered designs. The most renowned block-printing traditions come from Rajasthan (Bagru, Sanganer) and Gujarat (Ajrakh).

Key Block-Printing Traditions

  • Bagru prints (Rajasthan): Earthy, muted tones using natural mud-resist paste and plant-based dyes. The designs feature geometric patterns and small floral motifs.
  • Sanganeri prints (Rajasthan): Finer, more intricate floral designs in brighter, cleaner colors — often on white or pastel backgrounds.
  • Ajrakh prints (Gujarat/Sindh): Deeply geometric designs in deep reds and indigo blues, with extraordinary layering of multiple block-printed patterns. Ajrakh is one of the most complex block-printing traditions in the world.

Why block-printed fabric matters: In each piece of authentic block-printed fabric, you can find the slight imperfections of human hands — no two repeats are perfectly identical. This is not a flaw; it is the signature of handmade artistry.
